Red Specter by Brian AndrewsMy rating: 5 of 5 stars
Outstanding!
I can only write the same review about the Tier One series so many times. To me, a hands down "Best in Class" in a stacked division of well written political/thriller/shooter/spy novels. I'm a huge fan of all the BAMF stars; Rapp, Reacher, Gray, Raynor, Andreas, Harvath, Victor etc... But Andrews and his Tier One series has just been superior on all fronts. The plot creativity, truly surprising twists, shockingly emotional moments for a door kicker thriller and an unrivaled NEED for the series to keep going. John Dempsey and the Ember team are simply the best.
In Red Specter, Ember is up against its Russian counterpart, a similarly blacker than black group of Aplha operators "Spetsgruppa Zeta." Further, the groups leader is not only JD's operational equivalent, but a physical doppelganger as well. The story follows a wild blow-for-blow trade between the two groups and possible geopolitical fallouts to Word War 3. Not surprisingly, Red Specter is sprinkled with excellent character development, some of which made me smile ear to ear and some nearly drawing a tear. A fact not lost on me being as I take the "I'm too tough to cry at movies" bravado (even Rocky 3 failed to draw whimper.) The combat sequences were excellent, the tech sent me to Google wondering (holy sh#t is that real) and it's all topped off by an amazing performance by Ray Porter (I supplement my print copy with audio in the car,) whom I first discovered when he narrated Howard Wasdin (of Seal team 6) autobiography. The combination is a perfect storm of Bad Assery and I can't wait for the next release!
