Crusader One by Brian AndrewsMy rating: 5 of 5 stars
Brian Andrews is really knocking this series out of the park...
Just recently I had reviewed a similar military/espionage thriller, in which I point out how all the plotlines in this subject have essentially been covered, and we're just reading slight variations of each. This is not the case with Tier #3
Dempsey and the Ember squad are back, and from the first pages of Crusader One you'll be "Oh Sh#T"-ing yourself. The Iranian bad-boys of VEVAK are back on the offensive and with devastating results. This time, Ember is teamed up with it's Israeli counterpart "The Seventh Order." Neither team too excited to be exposed to the other, but naturally a mutual respect is formed and it's all eyes on the mission at hand. The mission itself can not be discussed without spoilers, but we do find Dempsey taking on an apparent suicide mission INTO Tehran. Because of the high risk, JD is forced to leave the Ember team behind, entering Iran with one other 7th Order operative and nothing else.
I am both pleased and surprised to say there were plot twists in here I truly did not see coming. Given how I mentioned, most plots have been explored in this realm, Brian Andrews really shines in being able to shock the reader on more than one occasion.
As always, the dialogue and interaction between characters feels totally legitimate. You can sense Dempsey's transition from SEAL to Spy, while still holding on to his true Frogman grit. A growing bond within Ember, and an ending that just begs for Andrews to hurry up and publish the next addition. Not only is Crusader One a must read for fans of the Tier One series, the series itself is a must for fans of, who I'd consider, Dempsey's doppelgangers. Mitch Rapp, Kyle Swanson, Court Gentry, Jack Reacher etc. You know, the real ass-kickers of Thriller/Shooter novels.
